Bangladesh Cricket Board investigates Shakib Al Hasan for promoting a betting company

The controversy between Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh Cricket Board became even more heated after the veteran received a demonstration notice for posting on social media. The All-rounder said he had entered into a sponsorship agreement with betting firm Betwinner News due to the fact that the country has strict betting laws and their prohibition.

Shakib Al Hassan received a demonstration notice for posting on social media and promoting a betting company.

In a statement, Nazmul Hasan, president of the governing body, said that they were not aware of the events in Shakiba, so appropriate action will be taken against him.

Bangladesh’s most successful player, he played 373 matches for the Tigers, made more than 13,000 international runs and scored 631 wickets in various formats.

“In today’s meeting the issue was raised and we said how can it happen, because it is impossible. If that happens ask him immediately. Serve him notice and ask him how it happened because the board will not allow it. If it is related with betting we won’t allow that. We have said that today,” he explained.

“Some are saying in the board that it might not be related with that (Betwinner is an online gambling portal) and in that case we are unable to take a decision. Still I have asked them to know it as soon as possible. Board’s stance is very clear that it is impossible for us.”

Betting sites have now become an integral part of cricket, and many teams support the idea. That said, the fact that the practice is legal and widespread in some countries. But the subcontinental region is considered completely closed to such practices.

“[But] first we have to know what he has done. This (betting related activities) is not only in cricket but in this country it is prohibited and the law does not permit it. This is a serious issue. We cannot depend on Facebook posting or things like that we have to investigate it. If it is true, than board will take necessary steps,” the BCB President said concluding his statement.

Prior to that, Shakib was suspended from playing cricket for one year in 2019. He didn’t report, the bookies’ approaches and he was deemed guilty of three counts of the ICC code of conduct. With the 35-year-old likely to play a key role in the upcoming Asian Championships and T20 World Tournament, it is unclear whether further action will be taken against him.
